Valentines Day in Loveland

February 2nd, 2010

This post ventures to say that of all of the holidays that our country celebrates Valentine’s Day is Loveland’s favorite holiday.
Valentine’s Day was originally a feast, established by Pope Gelasius the 1st, nearly fifteen hundred years ago. The feast was set in honor of the (possibly plural) saint named Valentine. As the story goes, a woman wrote a love note to Valentine who became a martyr. Ergo, the note-giving tradition was born! The tradition of the note gave way to the Valentine’s Day card in the last 100-200 years. Traditional flowers have also come recently in approximately the same time line.

Here in Loveland, the heart symbol has been placed in many locations around town. The heart really is our icon!
