Part 1 – Buying a home: Choosing a real estate agent
December 3rd, 2009The single most important step in the process of buying or selling a home is choosing an agent. Now, speaking from experience, agents come in all shapes, sizes, and experience levels. So, we need to be thinking about who would best suit our needs.
There are, literally, hundreds of thousands of real estate agents in the United States. Choosing the right one can be difficult since there are so many. One thing that can help in the beginning is looking for someone that has the REALTOR® designation. A Realtor® is a member of the National Association of Realtors and holds to their strict code of ethics. Higher still, is the title of broker. A broker is someone who is responsible for an office and, generally, all of the agents that work out of that office. A recent change brought all agents the title of Associate Broker. So be sure to keep the distinction clear from the title of Broker.
When it comes down to it, a good agent will make titles fade to gray. They are, however, a beginning indicator of how educated someone really is.
After meeting some realtors, you’ll get a feel for the good ones. A few more things to ask yourself about a potential agent:
> Does this person really understand the market?
> Does this person explain things well for each option available to me?
> Is this person a good listener?
> Does this person have my best interests at heart?
> Does this person have a good mentor?
One thing that I’d like to emphasize here is that your agent should be a person who can understand your needs. Some agents are simply salesmen chasing their commission. Good agents are in it because they enjoy taking care of their clients. Your agent should be a person. i.e. they should also need time with their kids, time for their church, etc.
Buying or selling a home is about finding the life that is worthwhile.
Keller Williams Mission: To build careers worth having, businesses worth owning and lives worth living.
So, when you’re considering a person to be your agent, I encourage you to keep these things in mind.
